Alpacas are exotic animals originally imported from South America from the
countries of Peru, Bolivia, and Chile, that are now raised in the United States
as livestock for their fiber.
Alpaca
fiber is sheared annually and processed into designer suits, blankets, and yarn
and is highly sought after in the high fashion industry for its truly fantastic
properties. The fiber is soft as cashmere, and lustrous and shiny as silk, as
strong as wool, and each fiber is hollow inside giving it insulating properties
like a thermos. Even an extremely thin blanket is soft, shiny and very warm.
Alpacas grow fiber in 28 different natural shades, including white, black, gray,
rose-gray, brown, and many shades in between.

SUWANNEE
RIVER ALPACAS

|

|
Wanting
to escape the hustle and bustle of big city living, we came across
Alpacas.
Falling
for them on our first farm visit, we purchased 7 animals, headed back to
Florida and proceeded to find our future farm site. We located 100 acres
of gently rolling, heavily wooded future Alpaca paradise in north
Florida, 1/8th mile from the historic Suwannee River.
We visited Alpaca farms from South Florida to the North Central United
States, purchasing Alpacas with many diverse bloodlines and breedings,
looking for the right mixture of colors and conformation for our core
breeding animals.
|
|
Now,
in 2006, our operation has expanded to include dozens of fine animals,
with sales constantly changing the number of animals on hand at any
given time.
Most
of our females, if not Ribbon winners themselves, have produced many
show and auction quality animals in the past. We feel breeding
these core females to the champion quality herdsires we've chosen has giving us nothing but
superb results. It shows the 'proof is in the pudding'.
